Job Description
A Rough Layout Artist’s job is to translate 2D storyboards into 3D production. In doing so, setting a blueprint for the downstream departments whilst creating the cinematography of the film. You will create 3D sequences of shots through cameras, character staging and blocking that help tell the story and push the emotional impact of a scene.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish character blocking and animate cameras whilst creating pleasing compositions of shots.
- Responsible for quality checking your shots ensuring that you are using the latest assets and shot setups; maintaining a consistent look across shots within the sequences you are working on.
- Responsible for managing your time across shots to complete tasks in the set time to ensure sequences can be delivered on schedule, and to inform the supervisor if there are any problems preventing this from happening.
- Responsible for seeking regular feedback on your sequences, interpreting written and verbal notes and turning these around in the time required.
- Set up rough lighting for sequences/shots.
- May need to model and texture rough temporary assets when necessary.
- Keep your working scenes organised and structured correctly to pass to downstream departments.
- Communicate with your Lead or Supervisor on any issues that may arise or any cheats that may be needed.
Required Experience
- 6+ years of experience in Previs and/or Layout in feature films.
- Strong knowledge of camera composition and cinematographic principles.
- Some skills in modelling, basic texturing, FX, lighting, and editing may be required from time to time.
- Thorough knowledge of Maya.
